This is a great little par three course in the Sunshine Coast hinterlands.  Don’t be fooled by the ‘par three' tag, Tanawha Valley Golf Course is a very challenging golf course with some breath taking holes.  A must see.

The Course

When you arrive at the course, it is instantly clear this course is all about fun.  The fairways, greens and hazards are neat, tidy and playable however don't compare to the more traditional and established golf clubs.  Tanawah definitively makes up for this with nine of the best par three holes you will ever play.

The Variety

When every hole is a pleasure to play, variety is probably a mute point, right?.  Wrong.  Although the nine holes on offer are fantastic, there is a problem.  The problem, and admittedly it is a large problem for serious golfers, is that there are only nine holes available.  At Tanawah there is no need to even touch the woods or lower irons. Obviously this impacts the variety category quite heavily if you want to play a traditional 18 hole round.

The Challenge

For a par 3 course, Tanawah Golf Course is surprising hard.  In fact it is very hard.  Be warned, if you don't know the length of every club (woods and low irons excluded), you are going to end up in all sorts of problems.  Did we mention this course is hard?

The Price

Tanawah Golf Course is difficult to rate is this category.  On one hand, it definitely does not offer the quality, variety and length of traditional golf courses.  Nine short holes is nothing to write home about.  On the other hand, the green fees are so damn cheap at half (or even less) the price of those better traditional courses.

The Facilities

The facilities at Tanawah are quite good for the casual weekend player.  The course has a small, lightly fitted ‘pro shop’, a free BBQ area and tennis facilities.  The facilities are definitely targeted towards family/casual players as opposed to the serious golfer.

No problems here.  Everyone was friendly and approachable.  Top marks.

The Extras

Nearly every hole on this par 3 wonderland is a cracker.  Holes of special mention are:

Hole 3.  The green is so much higher than the tee, you must go a couple of clubs bigger and hope for the best.

Hole 4.  A short hole with a high sloped edge on the right and a low tapered edge on the left leading to water/disaster.  Hit the left bank and run the ball down onto the green.

Hole 5.  This is  the opposite of hole 3.  The tee box is high and the green is only a short distance away but miles beneath the elevation of the tee.  Very short club ensures the ball runs down the slope.  Don’t go over the back!

If the course could get 10% on this category, it would.
